Do I need a license to do electrical work in California?

If you make connections of greater than 100 volt amps and you work for a C-10 electrical contractor, you need a state certification card or an electrician trainee registration. The Electrician Certification Unit states that requirement directly.

Sole owners who hold a license in their own name are exempt, and C-7 and C-45 contractors are exempt inside their own classification. Contracting for the work in your own name is a separate question, and that takes a C-10 license.

Does California have a journeyman electrician license?

No. California certifies individual electricians through the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and licenses contracting businesses through the Contractors State License Board. Neither agency issues a journeyman or a master license.

The General Electrician certification is what employers mean when a job ad asks for a journeyman. It carries the 8,000 hour requirement in CCR Title 8 section 291.1.

What is the difference between DIR certification and a CSLB license?

DIR certifies the person. CSLB licenses the business. The Electrician Certification Unit sits inside the Department of Industrial Relations and runs the five certification classifications under Labor Code section 3099.

The C-10 Electrical classification at the Contractors State License Board is what lets a business take the contract and pull the permit. Most working electricians need the first. Anyone contracting needs both sides covered.

How many hours do I need to become a certified electrician in California?

8,000 hours for General Electrician, 4,800 for Residential Electrician, 4,000 each for the Fire/Life Safety and Voice Data Video technician cards, and 2,000 for Non-residential Lighting Technician.

All of it has to be worked for a C-10 electrical contractor, and section 291.1 caps how much any single kind of work can contribute. Residential wiring, for instance, stops counting at 3,000 hours inside the General total.

How do I register as an electrician trainee in California?

Enroll in a state approved school, complete the Electrician Trainee Registration Application, and mail it with a $25 check payable to DIR - Electrician Certification Fund to the DLSE Electrician Certification Unit, P.O. Box 511286, Los Angeles, CA 90051-7841.

Online registration is not live yet. The unit's online services page asks trainee applicants to keep submitting by mail until further notice.

Do I have to be in school to be an electrician trainee?

Yes. The state's trainee page says an electrician trainee must be enrolled in a state approved school, and proof of enrollment goes in with the application.

Renewal each year asks for current enrollment verification and an unofficial transcript, and there is no trainee renewal fee. The state approves those schools and publishes the list; this site is not one of them.

How much does the California electrician certification cost?

The application instructions price a single exam at $175, which is a $100 exam fee plus a $75 application fee. Two exams cost $275 and three cost $375.

Renewal is $100 every three years, a lapsed card is $200, a replacement card is $30 and the trainee registration is $25. None of the exam money is refundable or transferable.

How long does it take to get certified in California?

Roughly four years for the General Electrician certification, since 8,000 hours at 40 hours a week lands near that. The state also describes 720 hours of related and supplemental instruction beside the field hours.

Once the application is in, the Division answers on eligibility within 30 days, and you then have one year to sit the exam. Cards are mailed within about two weeks after a pass.

How many questions is the California electrician certification exam?

General Electrician is 100 questions in 4 hours 30 minutes. Residential Electrician is 80 questions in 3 hours 30 minutes. The Fire/Life Safety, Voice Data Video and Non-residential Lighting exams are 50 questions in 2 hours 15 minutes each.

All five need 70 percent to pass, from the Candidate Information Bulletin. An older state FAQ prints slightly shorter times, and the bulletin is the newer document.

Can I bring my own code book to the California electrician exam?

No. The bulletin says you may not bring or use your own reference materials, because the testing system supplies them on screen.

Every candidate gets the 2023 National Electrical Code, NFPA 70E in its 2024 edition and the Cal/OSHA Pocket Guide for the Construction Industry. Specialty candidates get extra references, such as NFPA 72 and NFPA 170 for Fire/Life Safety.

How many times can I take the California electrician exam?

The rule sets a wait, not a cap. If you do not pass, you wait 60 days from the day you took the exam before sending in the retest application, and the retest exam fee is $100.

Your eligibility window still runs. Exams have to be taken within one year of the eligibility notice, so repeated failures eventually mean a fresh application.

What happens if my electrician certification expires?

CCR Title 8 section 291.5 requires anyone who allows certification to lapse to retake the certification examination. That is the rule, not a fee schedule.

The money side is a $200 renewal for a lapsed or expired card and a $200 exam fee on the renewal form for retaking after a lapse. Renewals should be postmarked or received 30 days before the period ends.

How many continuing education hours do California electricians need?

32 hours every three years, from an Educational Provider or from a state or federally approved apprenticeship program. The same renewal asks you to certify under penalty of perjury that you worked 2,000 hours in the industry over those three years.

The unit's continuing education page puts approved providers in three groups: trainee schools, apprenticeship programs, and providers under contract with a California public educational institution.

Does California accept an out of state electrician license?

Only as a ticket to the exam. The state FAQ says an out of state electrician's license will make you eligible to sit for the test, and there is no reciprocity for the certification itself.

Contractor licensing is separate. CSLB has agreements with Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and North Carolina, conditioned on five years of good standing and the classification appearing on that state's Reciprocal Classifications List.

What is a C-10 license and how do I get one?

C-10 Electrical is the Contractors State License Board classification for electrical contracting, covering placing, installing, erecting and connecting wires, fixtures, apparatus, raceways, conduits and solar photovoltaic cells.

It takes four years of journey level experience, the Law and Business exam, the C-10 trade exam, a $25,000 contractor bond and workers compensation coverage or an exemption. Education can substitute for up to three of the four years.

Can I pull my own electrical permit in California?

It depends on the jurisdiction, and the rule is local. San Diego states that an electrical permit can only be issued to a licensed California state contractor authorized to do electrical work, or to the property owner or lessee.

San Francisco allows only owner-installers of stand-alone single family dwellings to apply for an electrical permit to do the work themselves, and requires contractors to register with the Department of Building Inspection first. Los Angeles states that electrical permits are required for any electrical work.

How much do electricians make in California?

The statewide median is $36.62 an hour and $76,160 a year for occupation code 47-2111, from O*NET OnLine citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data.

Metro medians run from $34.48 an hour in Fresno to $44.63 in the San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont area. San Jose sits at $43.77 and Los Angeles at $35.49.

Which electrical code does California use right now?

The 2025 California Electrical Code, which is Part 3 of Title 24. The Building Standards Commission published the 2025 California Building Standards Code on July 1, 2025 with an effective date of January 1, 2026.

It is built on the 2023 National Electrical Code, and the 2023 NEC is also the edition supplied on screen at the certification exam.

How do I check if an electrician is certified or licensed in California?

Run two searches. The DLSE Electrician Certification Search covers certification cards, application tracking numbers and trainee registrations.

The CSLB license check covers contractor licenses by license number, contractor name or personnel name. Its database is offline Sundays at 8 p.m. through Monday at 6 a.m.

Do California cities issue their own electrician licenses?

Not as a competing license, but two local programs matter. Los Angeles County Public Works issues a Certificate of Registration as a Maintenance Electrician for an electrician permanently employed by one firm, with two years of experience with that firm and no exam.

San Francisco requires a state licensed contractor to register with the Department of Building Inspection before filing electrical permits online, holding C10, C7, C45, C46, D28 or D34. Check your own city page before assuming the state card is the whole story.
