California Electrician Trainee Registration: Step by Step

An electrician trainee registration is what you hold while you build hours toward certification. It costs $25, it renews every year, and it requires enrollment in a school the state has approved. Here is how the registration works and where the approved schools are listed.

What the trainee registration is

It is a registration, not a license. The Electrician Certification Unit describes it as the route for a person who lacks the work experience or the related instruction needed to sit the certification exam.

It lets you work for a C-10 electrical contractor under supervision while your hours build. The state's own line on supervision is short: a certified electrician supervises only one electrician trainee.

Enrollment comes first

The rule is stated as plainly as it can be: an electrician trainee must be enrolled in a state approved school, and proof of enrollment goes in with the application. That is the part people miss when they mail the form.

The Department of Industrial Relations publishes the list of approved schools with a school number, a name and an address for each one. If a school is not on that list, its classroom hours do not do the job.

One thing we have to say plainly

The State of California approves the schools that teach the electrician trainee curriculum, and this site is not one of them. We are not a state approved school, not an approved continuing education provider, not a registered apprenticeship program and not an exam vendor.

How to register

  1. Enroll in a school on the state approved list and get proof of enrollment.
  2. Complete the Electrician Trainee Registration Application.
  3. Include a check for $25 payable to DIR - Electrician Certification Fund. The fee is set at $25 by CCR Title 8 section 292.0.
  4. Mail it to the Department of Industrial Relations, DLSE Electrician Certification Unit, P.O. Box 511286, Los Angeles, CA 90051-7841.

Registration is still a paper process. The unit's online services page says electrician trainee online registration will be available at a later date and asks applicants to keep mailing the application until further notice.

Renewing the registration

The trainee registration renews every year. The FAQ says renewal takes current enrollment verification and an unofficial transcript, and that there is no trainee renewal fee.

That yearly proof is the state checking that you are still in class, not just still on a payroll. Falling out of school is what usually ends a trainee registration.

Trainee is not the same as apprentice

An apprenticeship is a program, registered with the state or the federal government, that pairs employment with classroom instruction. A trainee registration is a card the state issues to an individual. Apprentices in a state approved program are on a different track and their program handles the instruction side.

The Division of Apprenticeship Standards database lists registered programs by trade and county, and says plainly that the programs listed there are all officially registered, though being registered does not mean a program is recruiting today.

Then what happens

When the hours and the curriculum are done, you file the Application for Electrician Examination and Certification. Section 291.2(g) requires proof of completion of the approved curriculum for the classification you are applying for, and certification follows only after you pass the exam and submit proof of experience.

The Division responds on eligibility within 30 days, and the exam has to be taken within one year of that notice.

How much is the California electrician trainee registration?

Do I have to be in school to be an electrician trainee?
